Tech Session

Now for the CYA: I have more than 30 years experience as a redneck engineer, shade tree mechanic, duct tape specialist. I was a certified welder, machinist, fabricator and aircraft mechanic. I now sit on my rear and work with computers all day. I in no way am representing myself as a professional. I am merely sharing my own experiences with my personal cars. Most of the time I do things the wrong way and the hard way. I am just sharing so you can learn from my experiences and mistakes.

I decided to restore my 1969 Bay Window Bus steering wheel. It had numerous medium size cracks and spider cracking all over the center section. Near the horn there was a pretty big chunk of plastic missing. Replacement steering wheels are around $400 and a restored one from a parts place is about $200. I have a bay crewcab with a good steering wheel (had). The whole center section broke off when I tried to put the puller on it.  I read a lot about how to restore one off the web and thought I would give it a try. I am very happy with the results, but I have a lot of labor and cost in the supplies. Click on the picture to read more.
